Spina bifida-patiënten wijzen Europees parlement op Nederlandse schending van mensenrechten

Het Europees Parlement heeft vlak voor kerst een onderzoek toegestuurd gekregen van de International Federation for spina bifida and hydrocephalus, de internationale organisatie voor mensen met open rug of waterhoofd. Daarin concludeert de Amerikaanse jurist James E. Wilkinson dat Nederland met het Gronings Protocol over levensbeëindiging bij pasgeborenen enkele mensenrechtenverdragen overtreedt.
'Practices, like the Groningen Protocol, that counsel parents that it is best for babies to die because they have severe impairments violate international human rights standards. States adhering to those standards must overturn medical practices that counsel for the death of infants because of stereotyped negative judgments about the worthiness of life with a disability', concludeert Wilkinson.
